Various Lesson Plans

ArcLessons is an ESRI developed site used as a resource to share LessonPacks for using GIS in the classroom. The LessonPacks on ArcLessons have been created by teachers for use in the classroom.

Digital Library for Earth System Education contains links to other sites that provide GIS data and lesson plans.

Teaching with GIS in the Geosciences

STEM: Geospatial Technology at James Madison University – National Center for Rural Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Education Outreach. Middle School lesson plans.

GIS Modules from Lane Community College in Eugene, OR, as part of their MAPS GIS project. A major component of the MAPS GIS project is the creation and dissemination of Internet based learning modules that use GIS to teach a variety of geospatial concepts across the curriculum.

GIS Career Awareness Learning Modules from San Diego State University. These web-based GIS Learning Modules are designed for High School students, and certificates are available upon completion of the modules.

GIS for History are lessons plans that use GIS. GIS software is not required. The map is online that is used with layers that you can turn on and off. You just need a computer with internet access. Designed for high school and undergraduate American History classes but could be amended for younger students.

GIS Lessons on the Web are Web-based GIS lesson plans. GIS software is not required.

USGS lesson plans using GIS.

Metropolitan East Coast Assessment Education Module includes a link to the data needed for the two lessons provided: climate change mapping and thematic mapping using census data.

National Geographic Xpeditions – Geography Standards in Your Classroom – site has index of lesson plans. Some of these lessons use the internet to demonstrate GIS and view satellite imagery. Some of the lesson names that do this are “GIS Helping to Save the African Wild” and “What can we learn from satellite images.”

Learning with GPS are GPS lessons plus links to other online resources.
